Benefits of having a Powder coated Iron Door

When it comes to having an iron door colored to match the design you have in mind for your entryway, you have two options – paint or powder coating. Both are good options in terms of coloring iron to fit your needs, but in truth they are not equal in many respects.

If you want an iron door that isn’t iron colored, you should strongly consider a powder coat rather than more traditional painting options. Unlike paint, powder coating is actually electromagnetically charged powder that adheres to the iron. The benefits of using this process include:

  • Environmentally Friendly – Paint is full of chemicals that can hurt the environment and after painting is done, anything left over needs to be disposed of in HAZMAT-approved standards. Powder coating, however, has no solvents and is almost completely free of air pollutants.
  • Looks Better – “Powder” tends to evoke thoughts that the coverage is somehow thin and easily removed, but powder coatings are actually twice as thick as paint and tend to last much longer. It is also more resistant to corrosion and chemical exposure, although hopefully you won’t have to test that chemical exposure part too much.
  • Last Better in the Elements – Powder coated doors are often combined with a zinc primer that gives it a huge shield in terms of humidity and the elements. However, while it can withstand rain and snow, high pressured exposure like with power washing should still be avoided.
